One of the biggest worries parents have before their newborn session is:
“What if my baby doesn’t sleep?”
And honestly? Sometimes they don’t.
This sweet little guy came to his newborn session completely ready to party — wide-eyed, curious, giving us his adorable signature grumpy face that Mom says he makes all the time. And truthfully… I was obsessed with it.
Because newborn photography doesn’t always have to mean perfectly sleepy poses.

While I always send parents a detailed prep guide before their session to help encourage sleepiness and comfort, babies are still tiny humans with their own personalities and agendas. Some babies sleep deeply throughout their session, while others would much rather stay awake and check everything out.
And that is completely okay.
Over the years as a newborn photographer in Cleveland, I’ve learned that the best sessions happen when we follow the baby’s lead instead of forcing expectations. If your baby doesn’t want to sleep, we simply shift gears and use a more relaxed, baby-led approach.
I call it “unsoothing.”
Instead of constantly trying to rock, bounce, or settle your baby into sleep, we allow them space to simply be. Calm. Awake. Stretchy. Curious. We work slowly and gently, capturing those beautiful alert expressions, tiny movements, and all the little personality traits that make your baby uniquely them.

Honestly, some of my favorite images come from awake newborns.
The eye contact.
The tiny expressions.
The serious little faces.
The moments where they seem so aware already.
This sweet boy gave us so much personality during his session, and his images feel incredibly authentic to who he already is.
That’s the beauty of a calm newborn session experience — there’s no pressure for your baby to perform. My studio is designed to feel peaceful, warm, and comfortable for both baby and parents, whether your little one sleeps the whole time or decides they want front-row seats to the action.

Know that your session does not have to be “perfect” to create beautiful images. Some babies are sleepy, some are wide awake, and every session tells its own story.
And sometimes… the babies who come ready to party end up giving us the most unforgettable photographs of all.
